Spiral Staircase

Spiral Staircase

Weland spiral staircases are manufactured with treads of grating or checkered plate. Safety nosing is included on all grating treads and platforms. The staircases are suitable for access to and egress from all types of areas. Applications include maintenance platforms, storage mezzanines, silos, water towers, theater catwalks, observation decks and pump stations.

The standard finish of Weland spiral staircases is hot dip galvanized in accordance with class SS-EN ISO 1461.

Architecturally pleasing

Spiral staircases in many cases blend well with their surroundings as a part of the façade.

Flexible

Spiral staircases require the same small base irrespective of how high they are. They can be manufactured left turning or right turning and have a different number of treads per revolution. This means that, as a rule, you can always achieve an efficient staircase.

Light Design

Spiral staircases normally do not demand extra load carrying constructions provided the landings are not excessively large.

Space saving

A spiral staircase with a radius of 3 feet and a radius adapted step-off landing sized 3’ 4” x 3’ 4”  takes up a footprint of only 6’ 4” x 6’ 4”.

Spiral staircases represent in most cases a very useful staircase solution

Can be constructed to great height

Spiral staircases can be built very high without any extra supports, provided bracing can be arranged, for instance against a wall. If there is no adjacent wall, bracing can be carried out with vertical support legs outside the staircase circumference.

Safe

A person who stumbles on a spiral staircase will likely have his or her fall arrested in about 90 degrees of staircase rotation (~3’ of height). The spiral design prevents a long tumbling descent over many steps.

Escape / Rescue

Since spiral staircases are comfortable to descend, an escape can be carried out quickly. Rescue efforts involving a stretcher can also be performed on spiral stairs with a large radius (4’ recommended).

Knocked down construction

The whole spiral staircase is furnished knocked down, in a crate. There are no parts that require a crane to lift. This means that a spiral staircase can easily be installed in cramped spaces, using hand tools, without needing a crane or cherry picker.

Easy to erect

The spiral staircase consists of parts that are assembled on site. The only tools required are a hand drill, a ratchet and a set of Allen wrenches. Erection plans are included with every delivery. We also have available, a downloadable film as an assembly aid.

Quick Delivery

Weland spiral staircases for evacuation and industry can be supplied with extra short delivery times provided that standard components are used.

Spiral staircase standard

Railings

Weland produces four different standard railings for spiral staircases. The choice of railing depends mainly on where the stairs are to be placed and whether children will be in the area where the spiral staircase is placed. The height of the railing is ~43-1/2” at the nose of the step.

Handrail

As standard the handrail is made of stainless steel tube. The handrail is attached to the balusters by a clamp.

Stairtreads

Standard stairtreads are available in two different designs, grating and checkered plate treads.

Landings

Different types of landings are needed for the stairs to be functional and to blend into the environment. As standard the spiral staircase is fitted with square landings and if necessary also an intermediate landing.

The stairs can also be connected to other types of platforms or balconies.

Weland also produces other levels, such as mezzanine floors, etc.

Alternative designs

Railings

Railings with sheet metal, perforated metal and wire mesh are other variants of railing made by Weland. This type of railing is child-proof, i.e. the opening is a maximum of 4”. Also used in industry when the stair height exceeds 2 stories.

Handrail

Weland spiral staircases can be fitted with both extra handrails as well as inner handrails.

Stairtreads

Weland also produces staircases with concrete steps.

Balconies

In some cases you can combine the spiral staircase with a balcony all according to the customer’s needs.

Protective cages

Several designs of protective cages are available to secure access to the spiral staircase.

Design help

When you furnish the desired height and radius of the staircase, Weland will design the particulars to include riser height and steps per revolution. We furnish an approval drawing for your further comments, and then manufacture according to the drawing you approve!

All Weland designs comply with all applicable OSHA requirements.
